What is Noni?

Noni (
Morinda citrifolia L. Rubiaceae) is a traditional Polynesian medicine that has become a popular complementary and alternative medicine worldwide.
Noni fruit has a history of use as an ethno medicine and a famine food in Polynesia. Traditional medicinal uses include treatment of boils, cuts, abscesses, various forms of inflammation, fungal infections, constipation, and diarrhea. The roots and bark are used to make red and yellow dyes.
Noni fruit is cultivated in Polynesia and Hawaii. The evergreen tree is a member of the
Rubiaceae family and produces an unusual potato-sized ovoid fruit covered by polygonal
sections. The fruits contain several classes of compounds including polysaccharides,
iridoids, anthraquinones, coumarins, flavonoids, lignans, phytosterols, and carotenoids.
Nutritional constituents include 3-4% each of glucose and fructose, 0.2-0.5% protein, and
0.1-0.2% lipids, as well as potassium (30-150 ppm), calcium, sodium, magnesium, and
vitamin C (30-155 mg/k).
Noni Uses
The traditional uses of Noni in Hawaii were topical for ailments such as sprains, swelling, bruises, and wounds. In Polynesia and Southeast Asia, it was also used for cough, colds, pain, liver disease, malaria, hypertension, and intestinal worms.
